I Will Be Your Bloom [Episode 1] (Japanese Drama 2022)

I don’t know if I mentioned that I’m taking Japanese language classes. In order to complement the learning process, I decided to randomly watch some Japanese dramas. My first J-drama content will be on “I Will Be Your Bloom”!

Instead of writing a review after watching the entire series, I’m going to attempt an episode-by-episode style. There are a total of 10 episodes, so I am setting myself a reachable goal. So... let’s watch this J-drama together!

Summary of Episode 1:

A female teacher inspired a male student to pursue his dreams. They met again years later by chance. She became a housekeeper while he was in a boyband that was scheduled to disband in 6 months. She offered her support regardless of his decisions to stay or to leave and he became determined to get his band a second chance. The band performed well on a chance stage. It did not revoke the President’s decision to disband them but was enough to pique her interest and issue them a challenge. She will renew their contract if they can top the charts within the 6 months.

Thoughts:

  • The main leads are so good looking! I thought the male lead’s presence might be weakened because he’s in a boy band with 6 other good-looking dudes, but no leh, his character stands out. The other dudes are, unfortunately, filler characters at the moment. Potential problem with having so many filler characters in a scene is that they might look a little bit awkward in the background.

  • The male lead was inspired by the female lead’s encouragement and chose a specific life path to pursue his dreams in the past. I think he will probably fall in love with her throughout the rest of the episodes. I mean look at the awkward but intimate scene at the end of the episode! Which scene? The one where he threw his towel on her head and whispered “I’m going to make your dream come true too” while holding her covered head close to his face. Definitely something that only happens in drama, but yeah, successfully created the tummy flutters for me LOL.

  • Yes, it is potentially a student-teacher romantic relationship and thus, bordering on controversial content. However, I think it’s way more palatable than the K-drama “Melancholia” (click to read my earlier review on Melancholia). There are currently no signs of them showing or developing any romantic interests when she was teaching in his school. Now, they are coincidentally encountering each other after both of them have exited the school setting. He has graduated and she’s no longer a teacher. I just don’t know how much time had passed in between. If a romance were to develop between these 2 adults from here on, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it. BUT, I foresee it being a problem because he's an idol and idols can't really date. Though I must say, what are the chances of such occurrences in real-life. The plot is something that almost only happens in drama luh.

  • I think the male character’s emotions and interactions with the female lead are complicated to act out. There’s a whole chunk of hurt and disappointment after perceiving that the teacher who spoke so much about pursuing one’s dreams abandoned her own dreams and disappeared. Yet she remains an important part of his life because she gave him the courage to chase his own dreams. So when they met each other again randomly at his dorm, I imagine that he would be surprised initially and slowly feeling upset and even angry when he remembers the hurt and disappointment he felt back then. I like the elaborated scene when the female lead runs after the male lead and they have a heated HTHT in the corridor after the President’s announcement of the band’s imminent disbandment. It helps us understand his feelings towards meeting her again a little better.

  • I think he’s going to like her more and more because he’s going to realise that there had been a great misunderstanding and she’s still that passionate and kind person whom he looked up to. He’s going to fall in love with her because he’s now older and they spend so much more time interacting in close proximity.

  • Curious to know: What happened in her life that made her stop the teaching work that she enjoyed? How much time has passed in between?

Side note: I drew the cover design based on the cute neon light decorations in their dormitory. The place they live in looks so cozy!
